Step 1: Survey or measure 10 people to find their heights. Determine the mean and standard (I did it)
deviation for this group by using the Week 3 Excel spreadsheet. Post a screen shot of the portion I have this below
of the spreadsheet that helped you determine these values.
Scenario/Summary
This week’s lab highlights the use of probability and normal distribution.
Follow the directions below to gather data, calculate using Excel spreadsheets, and interpret the results.
Deliverables
The deliverable is a Word document with your answers to the questions posed below based on the data you find.
Required Software

*** Create a description spreadsheet to describe the students surveyed.
a. How did you choose the participants for your study (sampling method)?
Review Different Types of Sampling Methods
1. Cluster: ____________________________________________________________
2. Stratified: ___________________________________________________________
3. Systematic: _________________________________________________________
4. Convenient: _________________________________________________________
5. Simple Random: _____________________________________________________
b. What part of the country did your study take place in?
c. What are the age ranges of your participants?
d. How many of each gender did you have in your study?
e. What are other interesting factors about your group?
–Take a Screenshot of your Description Spreadsheet and provide it below.
–Take a Screenshot of your Preliminary Calculations and provide it below.
1. How does your height compare to the
mean (average) height of the group that you surveyed? (MY HEIGHT IS 64)
2. Is your height taller, shorter, or the same as the mean of your group?
I wrote: Please use
I’m utilizing random sampling and a number variable in my study because I’m looking at the heights of 10 out of 20 nurses at a home care agency in Staten Island, New York. We have Team Meeting and Palliative Meetings every Tuesdays. Since it is numerical and can contain fractions, the data is quantitative continuous. Because I choose to sample the nurses where I work, which it is a convenience sample.
SPREAD SHEET EXCEL 3 PROVIDED PLACE HERE.
Step 2: Give some background information on the group of people you used in your study. You might consider using the following questions to guide your answer.
How did you choose the participants for your study? What was the sampling method: systematic, convenience, cluster, stratified, simple random?
What part of the country did your study take place in?
What are the age ranges of your participants?
How many of each gender did you have in your study?
What are other interesting factors about your group?
My Answers:
From the 20 heights, 10 provided by professor and random sampling of 10 registered nurses that I worked with in homecare.
The study took place in Staten Island, New York
Age range of participants are from 24-61
For this study I chose 2 males and 8 females
In my meeting, 8 of the nurses work on the field and 2 work in the office as supervisors. Eight female nurses were African-American and two were Caucasian. One of the supervisors is attending Chamberlain University for her MSN. Nine of the nurses already have a BSN. All stated that work can be overwhelming.
Step 3: Use the Week 5 Excel spreadsheet (Links to an external site.) for the following.
1. (Use the Empirical Rule tab from the spreadsheet). Determine the 68%, 95%, and 99.7% values of the Empirical Rule in terms of the 20 heights in your height study.
2. What do these values tell you?
3. Post a screen shot of your work from the Week 5 Excel spreadsheet.
4. (Use the normal probability tab from the spreadsheet). Based on your study results, what percent of the study participants are shorter than you? What percent are taller than you?
5. Post a screen shot of your work from the Week 5 Excel spreadsheet.
Example: If my height is 73 inches, then 20.86% of the relevant population is shorter. The other 79.14%, of course, is taller.
